Kansas City Digital Marketing Internship Program at Jennings Social Media & MarTech
Our competitive paid internship program in the fall, spring and summer semesters, actively recruits college seniors and recent graduates. Our 2017 summer interns were from schools such as the University of Kansas, Avila University and the University of Missouri. Through this dynamic internship experience, they’ve received the opportunity to work on digital advertising, content marketing and creative at our agency.
Because each of our team members specialize in a different marketing area, our interns get the chance to both see and work on all sides of a project. This close working relationship with our full-time staff helps them to better develop their professional skill set and deepen their knowledge of the fast-paced world of digital advertising.
Haley Paszkiewicz, a summer intern, explained, “Each day is different. Some mornings I’m helping with copy for social media posts and creating graphics, others I’m darting off to a client to take styled photos.”
When asked of her daily activities, Meghan Lewis, another summer intern, said, “It differs day-to-day, but for the most part, I do a lot of work with the agency blog and social media. When it comes to clients, I do some posts for them with reputation management and community management.”
Our interns are doing real agency work! They create content that will be published, interact with clients and have the pressure of real deadlines. The team treats each of them like permanent employees so they’ll come away from this experience being fully prepared to work in the industry.
Valerie Jennings-Ancona, founder and CEO, said, “We provide rigorous on-the-job-training to full-time and temporary employees due to the nature of the industry. While schools are doing their best to keep up, by the time graduates start here, we have to train them on everything from content creation to digital ads. The digital marketing space changes at the speed of light, and there is no way this real-world experience can be taught in school.”
The experience of working in a fast-paced digital marketing agency setting is unique in its ability for interns to work directly with the CEO and vice president. It’s advantageous for interns to have direct access to knowledge and guidance from the company’s leadership.
Lewis reiterated, “Working at a boutique agency has allowed me to get a sense for all different angles and run the gamut on what’s available in the marketing space. It’s nice to get a feel for what I will be interested in down the road.”
Through this experience, the interns all felt that they gained a level of experience and preparation that simply can’t be gained in a classroom. While entering an agency setting can be overwhelming, from learning the lingo to handing the high pressure, the internship program actively works to give students and graduates the tools to advance their career.
Paszkiewicz added, “Valerie and Michelle really pay attention to your interests and strengths. The best part of the whole experience for me has been getting to work with clients that I enjoy and developing strengths I didn’t even know I had. I feel like the program is very personalized so you can work with your own interests.”
