Q&A with the JSMM 2016 Interns
Internships at Jennings Social Media & MarTech are excellent experiences for young professionals to gain insight into the social media and digital marketing world. And with growing technology, platforms, methodology and practices, it becomes all the more important to cultivate talented interns to help everyday workflow as well as share our team’s wealth of experience with tomorrow’s workforce. We sat down with our summer 2016 interns to learn more about what they have gained through their internships so far.
Madison Rodick and Christina Blanchard have been assisting our editorial and production process as social media interns for the summer of 2016. Our production and digital media coordinator, Hannah Jarvis, recently sat down with them for a Q&A to see what they have learned from their experiences so far. The following Q&A has been edited and condensed.
Kansas City has a wide variety of digital agencies, both big and small. What made you decide to apply to JSMM instead of other agencies?
MR: I was excited to find a digital agency in Kansas City (close to home) that seemed really cool and fun to work for.
Were there any surprises along the way?
MR: I was surprised that I was able to get so much hands-on experience. Usually interns are more like the errand runners, getting coffee, etc.
CB: I was surprised at how casual the atmosphere is here and how closely we work with the CEO. I’ve learned a lot more than I would have at other companies because everyone works and collaborates togeher.
Have you learned anything new about yourself as a professional?
CB: I was always a little apprehensive about working at a fast-paced agency, but I’ve learned that it is something I can actually manage and do well in.
MR: I think one thing I’ve realized that I didn’t know before is that I am capable of handling a lot, especially important tasks, as long as I stay focused and determined.
What has been your favorite project so far?
CB: Creating artwork for our clients. I love finding new websites and platforms that help me make creative visuals for each company.
What do you consider the most valuable lesson you’ve learned so far?
CB: To not be afraid to ask questions. Especially in an industry like this, it is important to ask questions and clarify, not just figure it out on your own.
MR: One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned so far is how to prioritize and organize information in regards to different content for different clients. I also got to go to a client meeting with [our CEO] Val and that was extremely beneficial for me because I got to see how Val interacts with clients.
Now that you two are well on the way to becoming social media experts, do you see any new trends you think will take over in the near future?
CB: I think Instagram is only growing and will be even more crucial for companies in the future. It gives such a creative insight into the company that the general public might not know about otherwise. Also, live videos will become more popular and important for businesses. People love getting to see a transparent look into their favorite companies, and live videos are a great and easy way to do that.
MR: I think Snapchat is definitely on the rise, and I am excited to see how different industries utilize that platform.
One more question: If you could go back and give yourself some advice before you started here, what would it be?
MR: Buckle your seatbelt and get excited. Social media is constantly changing, but it’s really fun to always stay up to date on the newest, hottest trends in social media.
