This event venue social media case study shows how Jennings Social Media & MarTech (JSMM) helped Overland Park Convention Center (OPCC) strengthen digital visibility, audience engagement and social media clicks through an organic-first strategy without paid social advertising.
In 2024, JSMM transitioned OPCC from a paid-supported social media approach to an organic-first strategy focused on visual storytelling, platform-specific content and performance analysis. The objective was to expand the venue’s social media presence, encourage audience interaction and generate clicks without relying on paid distribution.
From January 1 to October 17, 2024, OPCC recorded 323% more social media clicks, 121% more impressions and 73% more social actions compared with the corresponding period in 2023, when paid advertising was part of the marketing mix.
Overland Park Convention Center serves a diverse event market, providing space for corporate gatherings, conferences, weddings and special events.
Marketing an event venue requires more than displaying available facilities. Prospective clients need to understand how a space can accommodate their event, what different setups might look like and the experience they can create for their guests.
Corporate event planners may prioritize flexibility, professional presentation and event execution. Wedding and social event audiences may place greater emphasis on atmosphere, visual details and the overall guest experience.
These considerations require content that demonstrates both the venue’s practical capabilities and the experiences it can accommodate.
OPCC partnered with JSMM to strengthen its social media presence through a more intentional content strategy. The opportunity was to use authentic event experiences, multimedia and audience insights to build awareness and engagement without depending on paid social distribution.
The central challenge was increasing social media visibility, clicks and audience engagement while transitioning away from paid advertising.
Paid campaigns had been part of OPCC’s previous marketing mix. Moving to an organic-first social media approach required a strategy that could drive audience activity through relevant content rather than paid distribution.
The strategy also needed to account for different event audiences. Corporate planners focused on the venue’s functional capabilities and professional event experience, while weddings and social gatherings offered opportunities for atmosphere-driven storytelling.
JSMM needed to communicate these distinct aspects through platform-specific content that drove measurable engagement.
JSMM developed a data-informed content strategy centered on three priorities: demonstrating the venue experience, tailoring social media content to each platform and using performance insights to guide ongoing creative decisions.
Experience-Led Content Strategy
Rather than relying solely on conventional venue promotion, JSMM emphasized content showing how OPCC’s spaces could support different types of events.
Event highlights, remodeled spaces, behind-the-scenes preparations and catering presentations provided opportunities to showcase the venue in use.
For prospective event planners, this content offered a more practical perspective than photographs of empty rooms alone. Completed setups and real event experiences showed how OPCC’s spaces could adapt to different occasions.
The approach connected the venue’s physical features with the experiences potential customers were planning.
Platform-Specific Audience Engagement
JSMM tailored content across three primary platforms, using each channel to emphasize different aspects of the venue.
On LinkedIn, the team focused on professional event highlights, employee spotlights and industry insights. The content showcased OPCC’s event-planning capabilities while highlighting the people and expertise behind event delivery.
On Facebook, posts featured remodeled spaces, venue amenities, event highlights and behind-the-scenes moments. These topics demonstrated the convention center’s versatility and gave audiences a closer look at its facilities and activities.
On Instagram, visual storytelling emphasized event setups, catering presentations and preparation footage. These assets highlighted the atmosphere, presentation and details that prospective planners could consider when evaluating the venue.
The platform-specific approach allowed JSMM to present relevant aspects of OPCC’s offerings to different audiences rather than relying on identical content across every channel.
Video and Multimedia Integration
JSMM incorporated videos, virtual tours and interactive content into the organic social media strategy.
For an event venue, these formats let audiences see how physical spaces look and function beyond static photography. Video can provide a closer view of room arrangements, event preparations, catering presentations and the overall venue experience.
These formats gave audiences additional ways to explore OPCC’s spaces, event setups and services before making an inquiry.
Performance-Based Content Optimization
JSMM analyzed social media performance to evaluate audience engagement and inform ongoing content decisions.
The team reviewed engagement patterns to refine creative priorities, including the use of multimedia, interactive elements and event-focused storytelling.
This process linked content production to audience behavior, helping the team assess which approaches earned attention and encouraged interaction.
Instead of evaluating success solely through posting activity, JSMM focused on measurable indicators of visibility, engagement and clicks.
These insights informed ongoing adjustments to the organic social media strategy.
Overland Park Convention Center recorded stronger social media visibility and audience activity during its 2024 transition to an organic-first strategy.
Compared with the corresponding paid-supported period in 2023, the convention center achieved higher social media clicks, impressions and social actions. The published case study reports these gains without paid social advertising during the 2024 measurement period.
Follower growth remained positive at 11%, compared with the 14% growth reported for 2023. Although follower growth was lower, the venue continued attracting followers while recording stronger visibility and interaction metrics.
The results show improvements in awareness and engagement indicators, particularly how often audiences encountered and interacted with OPCC’s social media content. Event bookings, qualified leads and revenue attributable to the campaign were not measured in the published results.
For event venues, this case study shows how experience-led storytelling, platform-specific messaging, and performance-informed content decisions can boost organic social media visibility and engagement without relying on paid advertising.
